Our Story

Founded in 2008 by a group of architectural historians and conservation specialists, teal-reef emerged from a shared conviction that understanding our built heritage is essential for making informed decisions about its future.

What began as a small research partnership has grown into a respected consultancy serving clients across the United Kingdom and beyond. Our founding members brought together expertise from academia, architectural practice, and heritage conservation—a multidisciplinary approach that remains central to our work today.

Over the past sixteen years, we have contributed to hundreds of projects ranging from modest Victorian terrace renovations to major cathedral restoration programmes. Each project reinforces our belief that every building has a story worth understanding.

Our Approach

We believe that effective heritage consultancy requires more than academic knowledge—it demands an understanding of practical realities. Our assessments balance historical significance with contemporary needs, helping clients navigate the sometimes complex relationship between preservation and progress.

Every building we examine is approached with fresh eyes and rigorous methodology. We begin with primary sources—the physical fabric of the structure itself—before consulting historical records, maps, and archives. This evidence-based approach ensures our findings are reliable and defensible.

We maintain independence from commercial interests, which allows us to provide objective advice whether we are advising on a sensitive restoration or assessing development impact on a heritage asset.

Our Values

Principles that guide everything we do

Rigorous Research

We base all conclusions on thorough investigation and documented evidence. Speculation has no place in our reports—when knowledge gaps exist, we say so clearly and recommend appropriate further investigation.

Clear Communication

Architectural history can be complex, but our reports and advice aim to be accessible to everyone involved in a project. We avoid unnecessary jargon and explain specialist terms when they are essential.

Balanced Perspective

We understand that buildings must serve contemporary purposes. Our recommendations seek to protect what is significant while recognising legitimate needs for change, adaptation, and sustainable use.
